Miele’s pyrolytic self-clean function burns off residue at very high internal temperatures, which is convenient but places real demand on the door lock and control electronics. A few habits keep it running reliably.
Remove Racks and Accessories First
Most Miele ovens require oven racks and any non-pyrolytic accessories to be removed before running self-clean, since the extreme heat can discolor or damage components not rated for the cycle.
Wipe Out Loose Debris Beforehand
Large food spills left in the cavity produce more smoke and residue during pyrolysis than necessary. A quick wipe-down before starting the cycle reduces strain on the process.
Don’t Interrupt the Cycle
Cancelling a self-clean cycle partway through, or losing power during one, is one of the more common causes of door-lock faults afterward. Let the cycle run to completion whenever possible.
If the Door Won’t Unlock Afterward
Let the oven complete its full cooldown before assuming a fault — many lockouts release automatically once internal temperature drops to a safe range. If it stays locked after cooling, book an oven repair visit.
