What FE 17 Means
Codes in the FE 01 to FE 25 band — FE 17 is the example Miele’s own documentation uses — show FE in the power-level display with a number alongside it. The documented cause is soiling between the ceramic surface and that particular touchpad sensor, and the number identifies which sensor is affected.
Common Causes of FE 17
- Spilled food, grease or sugar dried onto the control area
- Cleaning product residue left on the glass and not wiped off
- A cloth, lid or utensil resting on the control strip
- Moisture trapped under an object left on the panel
🔧 One Safe Check You Can Try
With the cooktop off and cool, clean the glass properly: a proper ceramic-hob cleaner, then a damp cloth, then dry it completely. Pay attention to the thin seam where the glass meets the frame, because that is where sugar, oil and cleaner residue collect and sit over a sensor.
⚠ Why You Shouldn't Go Further Than That
- If the panel is genuinely clean and dry and the code persists, the sensor itself or its connection is to blame rather than the surface.
- Repeated sensor codes in the same position often point at a seal letting moisture under the glass, which is not a cleaning problem.
- Scraping at a stubborn deposit with anything harder than a hob scraper risks the glass itself, which is by far the most expensive part of a cooktop.
Opening a panel to inspect or repair something yourself doesn't automatically cancel your manufacturer's warranty — but it can risk accidental damage, and some manufacturers do have specific service conditions. Check your product's warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.

Code meanings can change between control generations. Before acting on a code, match the full model number on your appliance's rating label against the manual for that model. We are an independent repair service, not affiliated with Miele & Cie. KG.
