Maintenance & Care

How Often Should You Descale a Miele Coffee System?

Mineral buildup from hard water is the single biggest cause of premature coffee system failures — here's a realistic descaling schedule.

If there’s one maintenance task that determines how long your built-in Miele coffee system lasts, it’s descaling. Mineral buildup from hard water is the leading cause of the heating and brewing faults we diagnose.

How Often, Really?

As a general guideline: every 2-3 months in hard-water regions, and every 3-4 months in softer-water areas. Your machine’s built-in water-hardness setting, if configured correctly for your area, calibrates the descaling prompt to your actual usage.

Use the Machine’s Program, Not a Manual Workaround

Miele coffee systems have a dedicated descaling program using a Miele-approved solution. Avoid generic descaling products not rated for your specific model — they can under-treat scale buildup or, in some cases, damage internal seals.

Signs You’re Overdue

Slower brewing, lukewarm coffee, unusually loud grinding, or a descaling prompt that returns quickly after a completed cycle are all signs it’s time. If descaling alone doesn’t resolve a fault, book a coffee machine repair visit.
