What F142 Means
F142 — F 01 42 — is the second step of the same warning: the refrigerator door has now been open for half an hour. At this point the compartment has been exchanging air with the kitchen long enough that the contents, not just the appliance, are worth thinking about.
Common Causes of F142
- Door left open long enough for the second warning stage
- Door held off its seal by an item or an overfull door bin
- Hinge sagging so the door no longer swings closed
- Door switch failing to register closure
🔧 One Safe Check You Can Try
Close the door, then check the chilled items nearest the front — dairy, cooked meats, anything you would normally treat carefully. Give the compartment an hour to pull back down before judging whether it is recovering as it should.
⚠ Why You Shouldn't Go Further Than That
- Repeated warnings at this stage, with no obvious reason, point at the door hardware rather than at how the appliance is being used.
- Half an hour of warm humid air condenses onto cold surfaces, and that moisture finds its way into insulation and connectors over time.
- Hinge and alignment work on a built-in appliance affects both the appliance door and the furniture panel carried on it.
Opening a panel to inspect or repair something yourself doesn't automatically cancel your manufacturer's warranty — but it can risk accidental damage, and some manufacturers do have specific service conditions. Check your product's warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.
