What F196 Means
F196 means water is not being pumped out of the cavity once a cooking cycle finishes. Miele’s documentation gives three quite different explanations: air bubbles collecting in the drain filter openings, a drain filter bent slightly in manufacture so its small holes sit flat against the cavity, and a failed reed switch on the drain pump.
Common Causes of F196
- Air bubbles trapped in the drain filter openings
- Drain filter slightly bent, sealing its small holes against the cavity floor
- Reed switch on the drain pump failed
🔧 One Safe Check You Can Try
Once the oven is cool, lift out the drain filter and look at it. Miele’s own service note for a filter that has been bent in production is to turn it through 180 degrees so the bent side lifts clear of the cavity floor and water can reach the small openings again — no parts and no tools.
⚠ Why You Shouldn't Go Further Than That
- If turning or replacing the filter does not clear it, the next suspect is the reed switch on the pump, which sits under the cavity and is reached by dismantling the appliance.
- Miele’s note is explicit that the reed switch is replaced on its own and the whole drain pump does not have to be changed — an unnecessary pump is a real risk of a parts-first repair.
- Water left standing in a warm cavity turns into a smell and a scale problem quickly, so an incorrect fix here does not stay harmless for long.
Opening a panel to inspect or repair something yourself doesn't automatically cancel your manufacturer's warranty — but it can risk accidental damage, and some manufacturers do have specific service conditions. Check your product's warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.
