What F73 Means

F73 means the brew unit did not reach the position it was asked for within six seconds. Miele’s documentation works through four causes in order: the unit physically blocked, a loose plug on the wiring harness, a defective position switch, and finally a defective drive.

Common Causes of F73

  • Brew unit blocked by compacted grounds or a foreign object
  • Wiring harness plug loose at the brew unit
  • Position switch S60-1 or S60-2 defective
  • Brew unit drive or its cam mechanically failed

🔧 One Safe Check You Can Try

Switch the machine off and, if your model has a removable brew unit, take it out and look for what is jamming it — a compacted puck, a stray bean, or a coffee crust on the guides. Rinse it under warm water, let it dry and refit it without forcing.

⚠ Why You Shouldn't Go Further Than That

  • Miele’s procedure distinguishes an electrically dead switch from a mechanically broken drive cam, and the two need different parts.
  • The drive is initialised in service mode with the brew unit removed to see whether it moves at all — a test that is not available from the front panel.
  • Forcing a jammed brew unit back into place is the classic way a cleaning job becomes a drive replacement.

Opening a panel to inspect or repair something yourself doesn't automatically cancel your manufacturer's warranty — but it can risk accidental damage, and some manufacturers do have specific service conditions. Check your product's warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.

F73 FAQ

Do not lever it. A unit stuck part-way through its travel has to be released properly, and forcing it breaks the guides.

Weekly under a warm tap for a household machine, more often if you use oily dark-roast beans.
