What F17 Means

F17 means water is reaching the machine, but not enough of it. Miele’s service documentation defines the trigger precisely — fewer than five pulses at the flow-meter input in six seconds — and lists six causes, from a water tank that is not seated properly through to a failed pump.

Common Causes of F17

  • Water tank not inserted correctly
  • Pump run dry after the machine stood unused for a long period
  • Hoses clogged or kinked, or wiring shorted
  • Water tank valve jammed or clogged
  • Flow meter jammed or defective
  • Water pump defective

🔧 One Safe Check You Can Try

Take the water tank right out, refill it and push it firmly back until it seats. That is the first cause on Miele’s own list and the one that costs nothing. While the tank is out, check the valve in its base is not gummed up with scale.

⚠ Why You Shouldn't Go Further Than That

  • Miele’s documented remedy for a dry pump is to prime it with a pressure pump in service mode — a specific tool and a specific routine, not something that can be improvised.
  • The flow meter and the pump sit inside a built-in machine surrounded by heated water lines under pressure.
  • Six documented causes share one code, and working through them out of order means buying a pump to solve a tank-seating problem.

Opening a panel to inspect or repair something yourself doesn't automatically cancel your manufacturer's warranty — but it can risk accidental damage, and some manufacturers do have specific service conditions. Check your product's warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.

FAQ

F17 FAQ

Very. Miele lists a pump that has run dry after a long stand as one of the causes, and priming it is the documented fix.

Related but not identical — F10 is no flow registered at all, F17 is flow that is there but too weak.
