What F28 Means
F28 appears when you have used the ground-coffee chute rather than beans, and the brew unit cannot close into its pressing position because there is simply too much coffee in it. Miele’s documented remedy is to remove the excess and measure correctly next time.
Common Causes of F28
- More than the measured amount tipped into the ground-coffee chute
- Coffee added to the chute on top of a dose already sitting there
- A heaped rather than level scoop used
🔧 One Safe Check You Can Try
This is one of the genuinely fixable ones. Switch the machine off, take the brew unit out if your model allows it, clear the packed grounds, rinse and dry the unit and refit it. Then use the measuring spoon supplied rather than a heaped kitchen spoon — the chute is sized for one level scoop.
⚠ Why You Shouldn't Go Further Than That
- If the unit still will not reach the press position after the grounds are cleared, the problem is mechanical rather than a loading mistake and moves into brew-unit territory.
- A brew unit forced back into the machine against resistance damages the drive, and that is a considerably more expensive repair than a blocked chute.
- Some built-in models do not have a removable brew unit at all, and on those the grounds have to be cleared from inside.
Opening a panel to inspect or repair something yourself doesn't automatically cancel your manufacturer's warranty — but it can risk accidental damage, and some manufacturers do have specific service conditions. Check your product's warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.
