What F3 Means

F3 is a short circuit at the NTC temperature sensor on the steam heater — the steam-side counterpart of F1. Machines with milk functions run a separate heater for steaming, and this is the sensor that watches it. It is not a water-tank message: an empty tank is a plain refill prompt, while genuine water-supply problems are reported as F10 and F17.

Common Causes of F3

  • Steam heater NTC internally short-circuited
  • Sensor wiring shorted against the heater body
  • Scale or moisture bridging the sensor contacts
  • Connector damaged at the electronics

🔧 One Safe Check You Can Try

Note what still works. If espresso and hot water are normal and only the milk drinks fail or are refused, that separates the steam circuit from the coffee circuit and immediately narrows the diagnosis.

⚠ Why You Shouldn't Go Further Than That

  • Steam circuits run hotter than brewing circuits, and their sensors and cut-outs are not interchangeable with the coffee-side parts.
  • Miele checks the NTC in service mode against defined resistance values, which the front panel does not expose.
  • On a built-in installation the appliance has to be drawn from its cabinet before any of this is reachable.

Opening a panel to inspect or repair something yourself doesn't automatically cancel your manufacturer's warranty — but it can risk accidental damage, and some manufacturers do have specific service conditions. Check your product's warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.

FAQ

F3 FAQ

No. F3 is the steam heater sensor. Water-supply problems are F10 (no supply) and F17 (insufficient supply).

Often yes, since Miele treats the coffee and steam heating as separate circuits — but if the machine refuses to run at all, do not work around it.
