What F85 Means
Both Miele documents record F85 as a slide shutter signal change problem. The machine watches the signal that tells it what the shutter is doing, and that signal is not changing the way it should as the assembly moves. It is not a temperature sensor code — the wash water sensor has its own numbers, F01 and F02.
Common Causes of F85
- Sensing contact or switch for the shutter failed
- Wiring between the shutter assembly and the electronics broken
- Shutter moving but not far enough to change the signal
- Contact contaminated by residue in the water path
🔧 One Safe Check You Can Try
There is nothing user-serviceable behind this one. The useful step is to clean the filters so the technician starts from a clean sump, and to note whether the problem appears on every program or only on some.
⚠ Why You Shouldn't Go Further Than That
- A signal that never changes can mean a dead sensor or a shutter that is not moving, and those are different repairs with different parts.
- The sensing contact is in the wet part of the machine, where connections corrode in ways a dry appliance’s do not.
- Miele gives this assembly three codes precisely because it fails in three distinguishable ways, and guessing between them is expensive.
Opening a panel to inspect or repair something yourself doesn't automatically cancel your manufacturer's warranty — but it can risk accidental damage, and some manufacturers do have specific service conditions. Check your product's warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.
